Pizza In Croatia

September 16, 2011

We spent a week in Italy, but the best pizza we’ve eaten (so far) has been in Dubrovnik, Croatia.

While visiting Old Town Dubrovnik (beautiful, by the way), we befriended a British tour guide. She told us not to eat inside of the walls (except for one restaurant where we will dine tonight). “The food is better and cheaper outside of the walls,” she said.

We took her advice, and since both kids were begging for pizza, I spotted a place that — from the outside– reminded me of the Gibb’s Pizza Palace that used to be located by the Medical Center in Jackson. It was great (inexpensive too).

The place is run by a man and his two daughters, Tijana and Tanja.

The father wasn’t there, we were told by the daughter’s that he was competing in a fishing tournament.

Most pizzas in Croatia have “tomato (sauce), cheese, and ham” as a base. Items are added from there, but the base is usually those three ingredients.

This pizza was great. They use gouda cheese instead of mozzarella. They kind of turned their noses up at the thought of Italian pizza and mozzarella.

We haven’t hit Naples yet, but this pizza will be the measuring stick by which all other pizzas are judged for the rest of the journey.

The kids wanted to eat there again, tonight. It was good enough to visit for two meals in one day, but I’ve got “work” and “research” to do.

We invited the sisters to come for a visit and stay with us. We hope to see them again, soon.

Good stuff, that
